Realizing Broadband's Benefits

Puerto Rico and its citizens realize that the opportunities that exist with broadband have not been fully embraced. Without sufficient broadband access and a high level of technology adoption, Puerto Rico communities and residents will remain technologically and economically crippled in today's digital world.

Connect Puerto Rico is working with the Puerto Rico Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) and the Puerto Rico Infrastructure Financing Authority (PRIFA) to ensure all communities - rural and urban - have access to the unlimited benefits associated with broadband. We look forward to supporting Puerto Rico 's efforts to increase broadband availability and adoption across the island.

The Government of Puerto Rico (GPR) has identified as one of its main goals the digitalization of Puerto Rico and the democratization of Internet access. Currently, Puerto Rico has a low per capita income, a high unemployment rate and a need to develop a new model for its economy. The GPR and Connect Puerto Rico understand that through the effective deployment and implementation of an islandwide broadband system, the economic development of the island can be promoted while government services become more efficient, cost effective and more accessible to our constituents. Through the digitalization of Puerto Rico, technology-related jobs would be created and new businesses would be developed, establishing the island as a hub for high-technology manufacturing and services, taking advantage of our bilingual (Spanish and English) capacity. In addition, broadband capabilities would expand technological educational tools to help educate our people, assist in the interoperability of public safety systems and improve our health through the implementation of health related technologies.
