Telecommunications Regulatory Board is Providing Free Internet Access

Vieques – The president of the Telecommunications Regulatory Board (JRT), Sandra Torres, today inaugurated a JRT provided Wi-Fi service in the public square of Vieques. The JRT and Mayor Evelyn Delerme jointly held a conference to announce the effort to reduce the digital divide and make Internet available to everyone in Puerto Rico. The JRT is working closely with mayors to provide citizens with free Internet access, “either through the establishment of free Internet centers or by bring Wi-Fi service to the public squares of each municipality,” said Torres. Veterans may soon see telehealth co-pays eliminated and access enhanced

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is proposing to amend its regulations to exempt in-home video telehealth care from having any required copayment. This would remove a barrier to choosing in-home video telehealth as a viable medical care option. The VA hopes to make the home a preferred place of care for veterans, whenever medically appropriate and possible. Puerto Rico Moves Up on the World Economic Forum’s Network Readiness Index

Puerto Rico made a significant gain, now 2nd in the region, elevating from a 43rd to 36th  ranking, on The Global Information Technology Report 2012, Network Readiness Index (NRI). The Global Information Technology Report 2012 is a World Economic Forum project to explore the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on productivity and development. The NRI is a benchmark used by the Forum to quantify economies across the world, based on their use of ICT to achieve a competitive advantage.
