Liberty Global Acquires Choice TV

Liberty Global is expanding operations in Puerto Rico by acquiring Choice Cable TV, the island’s second largest cable operator. Liberty is teaming up with Searchlight Capital to buy Choice, which means that Liberty will be able to reach 80 percent of the homes in Puerto Rico. FCC Increases Broadband Speed Target

Yesterday, the FCC voted to increase the national broadband availability target from 4 Mbps down/1 Mbps up to 10 Mbps down/1 Mbps up fixed. One Project in Puerto Rico Awarded in Rural Broadband Experiment Auction

Last Friday, the FCC released the list of the “provisional” winners of the Rural Broadband Experiment auction. The good news? One project in Puerto Rico have been given funding.  This was the first time the FCC had awarded Connect America Fund subsidies for fixed broadband through competitive bids. Bids were due November 7 and were awarded based on cost-effectiveness comparison to the FCC Connect America Fund Cost model. Forty projects were awarded in the $100 million budgeted for the experiments. Of these, 15 projects accounting for $41.7 million are in our Connected Nation footprint (42% of all awards). $15 Million in Tech Upgrades for Puerto Rico Schools

Puerto Rico’s Department of Education recently announced a $15 million technology initiative to improve the Internet infrastructure in the island’s schools. Over the next five years, 1,384 schools will benefit from the development of technological projects in their classrooms. Goals of the initiative include increasing student retention, promoting academic achievement, and enhancing teaching staff skills.
