National High-Technology Day

By Wil Payton

Students on computersAT&T’s HACEMOS, a Hispanic/Latino Association, recently hosted its second National High Technology Day. More that 1,900 high school students from 30 cities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico were involved in the event which was designed to generate interest in STEM careers.

The students toured the company’s facilities, and had the opportunity to work with AT&T personnel, who shared technical insight about their areas of expertise.

According to the News is my Business website:

“The goal behind the annual event is to get more minority students interested in science, math and engineering career opportunities by exposing them to positive role models in science and technology,” said Rosie Montalvo, spokesperson for AT&T.

Citing National Science Foundation statistics, Montalvo said in 2007, Hispanics accounted for less than 7 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded in engineering. All minorities combined received 25 percent of degrees.
