New Fiber-Optic Broadband Network Being Developed in Puerto Rico

By Wil Payton

Fiber Optic CableA public utility firm has initiated a program to incorporate fiber-optic cable in its water pipe infrastructure. The work is currently in progress in the Santurce, Isla Verde, and Old San Juan areas and will be officially unveiled at the Puerto Rico Tech Summit on June 6.

Fiber-optic broadband provides the fastest and highest-quality connections currently available.

Below is an excerpt from a Caribbean Business article on this development:

Puerto Rico Chief Information Officer (CIO) Giancarlo González revealed the program is part of an effort to establish "gigabit communities," essentially areas with ultrahigh Internet connection speeds designed to attract businesses and spur investment (a gigabit is roughly equivalent to a thousand megabits).

"The digital industry is booming and if we want to give a new lease on life to the urban center of [the San Juan sector of] Río Piedras, for example, we should entice those industries to set up shop and drive investment. One of the most effective ways to convince them to come is if we are able to provide Internet connection speeds of at least 100 megabits per second," González said.
