Library Offers Free Take-Home Internet
When applying for jobs, taking an online course, finishing homework, or even setting up an e-mail account, many of the approximately 90 million Americans who do not have adequate Internet access at home turn to their local libraries. New programs offering mobile Internet access are now allowing library patrons to take the Internet with them when the library closes its doors at night.

Community Change Through Facebook
With more than 1.7 billion active users logging onto Facebook each month, it now represents the largest connected network in the world. Besides its massive global scale, Facebook also connects community groups including schools, universities, police departments, economic councils, and many others. To gauge the broadband infrastructure of Arenac County, Michigan, Connect Michigan (CM) asked key community members to share important messages on the site and share with their friends and neighbors.

Cutting the Cable
Video on demand (VOD) and streaming services are changing the way that viewers watch TV. Users no longer have to wait until nine o’clock to watch their favorite shows, and many are skipping commercials. New movies don’t have to be rented from a store, ordered via cable TV or even seen in a theater. Affordable online subscription services are expanding TV options and, in some cases, replacing cable.

Closing Dead Zones Without Radio Towers
With vast spreads of trees, the natural landscape of Ogemaw County, Michigan, is a large part of its appeal; however, that is also what makes it difficult to build radio towers, which transmit cellular signals and broadband over radio frequencies. Surrounding counties in northeast Michigan suffer the same dilemma, with a beautiful landscape that many seek to enjoy, but not while being cut off from the outside world.
