Ohio Communities Benefit From the Connect America Fund: A Connect Ohio Technical Assistance Blog
The Connect America Fund (CAF) is designed to provide incentives for telephone companies to build-out broadband infrastructure in eligible rural areas. The program, which is implemented in phases, has provided tremendous benefit to several areas of Ohio where Connect Ohio offers technical assistance support and in which high-speed Internet access was previously unavailable.

Back to the broadband basics!
Before working at Connect Ohio, if someone were to ask me what type of Internet I had I would have simply said the provider, not understanding the different types of broadband connections. For this week’s blog, I thought I would go back to the basics of broadband as a refresher for some of our readers, and overview for others. So, in the words of Julie Andrews, “Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start.”

E-rate
Last week, I saw an article posted on Twitter stating that the Cleveland city school district had “failed to collect $8.5 million in federal rebates” through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) E-rate program, and it immediately caught my attention. The E-rate program is one of many federal initiatives that Connect Ohio and our parent, Connected Nation, monitor.

Raise your hand if you used a floppy disk in school
As a recent college graduate, I never stopped to think about how quickly technology changes in our schools. I remember learning in elementary school how to save assignments onto a floppy disk then quickly switching to CDs and USBs. It’s funny to think that students today click the floppy disk icon on Microsoft Word to save a document, but have probably never used one in real life. With new technology continually invented and old equipment quickly becoming obsolete, how does this affect education?
