Location, Location, Location: Enhancing Public Safety with GIS
February is Public Safety Month at Connected Nation. In addition to objectives of expanding broadband and technology awareness and adoption throughout local communities, CN is also working to highlight the use of GIS in various public safety agencies. Location is everything during an emergency; GIS provides the functionality to collect and manage large databases while in a fast-paced decision-making environment.

There's an App for that: ReadyTN
There are almost two million apps available for download between the iPhone and Android. If you’re in Tennessee, one app could prove the most significant: Ready TN.
This app, developed in-house by the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, provides real-time updates from the National Weather Service, Tennessee Department of Transportation, Red Cross Shelters, and local contact information.

National Broadband Map 2-Year Anniversary
February 17, 2013, marked the two-year anniversary of the National Broadband Map (NBM), a tool to search, analyze, and map broadband availability across the United States. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) created and maintains the NBM, populating it with broadband datasets collected and submitted by states and territories for the State Broadband Initiative (SBI) grant program.

Internet Safety with Connected Tennessee & University of Memphis
Rules for the worldwide web are the same for both adults and children: people online may not be who they say they are, so never give out personal information, send your picture, or meet up with someone without permission (kids) or a friend and perhaps mace (adults).
Focusing on children, Connected Tennessee and University of Memphis provided Internet safety information to Boys and Girls Clubs in West Tennessee over the course of 2012 and are aiming to share the training statewide.

Hit the Lights - Global Green Lighting
Picture this scenario: it’s 11 pm and a group of suspicious looking characters are hovering around a car parked on the street under a streetlight. One of the guys starts trying to break the window of the driver side door. What if the streetlight overhead started flashing alerting a nearby police officer on patrol or catching the eye of the violators to prevent them from continuing the crime?

NTIA Announces Federal Funding Opportunity for the State and Local Implementation Grant Program
The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced yesterday the much awaited Federal Funding Opportunity (FFO ) for the State and Local Implementation Grant Program (SLIGP). With this, NTIA commences the key state-level planning process that will support the construction of a national public safety mobile broadband network (PSBN).

Connected Tennessee State Broadband Summit - February 27
Connected Tennessee is gearing up to host the first Connected Tennessee State Broadband Summit on Wednesday, February 27. This summit will be held at the Nashville Public Library downtown from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and will bring together local and state representatives from various industries including government, education, healthcare and more to learn about broadband best practices in the state, discuss strategies to address remaining barriers to broadband access, adoption, and use, and to network with other leaders across the state working to bridge the digital divide.
