Public Safety Communications in the Post 9/11 Era

By Amanda Murphy

The First Responder Network Authority, known as FirstNet, has released a video series of first responders sharing their visions for the future of public safety communications. The nationwide public safety communication network that FirstNet is working to deploy was prompted by the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2011. The 9/11 Commission recommended a dedicated first responder network to aid efficiency and timeliness during tragic events.

In the video series Looking Back and Looking Forward: The Future of Public Safety Communications in the Post 9/11 Era, FirstNet shares the stories of four public safety officials about the communication issues faced as a first responder on 9/11 at the World Trade Center, in emergency situations today, and how a fully interoperable communication network with bandwidth to back it up will intensely improve the future of public safety.

Connect Iowa, in partnership with the ISICSB, has delivered FirstNet presentations to representatives of all 99 Iowa counties and hosted workshops in the 6 regions throughout Iowa. During these workshops, a chair and vice-chair were elected to the Regional Interoperability Committee (RIC) to work with the ISICSB.

About FirstNet: The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the United States prompted the 9/11 Commission to recommend a dedicated public safety communications network. This network would be interoperable and nationwide to resolve the communication issues emergency responders face when tragedy strikes. The First Responder Network Authority, or FirstNet, an organization created in 2012 as part of the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation, is overseeing the building of the network.
